Regional Anesthesia

For placement, the patient is placed in the sitting or lateral position. The needle is placed at the level of the lumbar spine. The patient should have basic monitors placed prior to the injection of local anesthetic. The spine should be as straight as possible to facilitate needle placement. A ''high spinal'' may result in severe hypotension or apnea.
